Giving to help and to inspire
Richard Gark strives to live by a few simple words: Giving is a good thing to do.
The Jordan Station resident’s tireless volunteering made him realize, however, that more needed to be done to close the funding gap experienced by many good causes.
To help, he established the Gark Family Endowment Fund, in honour of his wife who died in 2010. Like Richard, Cathy believed strongly in the importance of giving back to the community, so it was a fitting tribute to support innovative projects in the region.
More than that, Richard hoped friends and family would see the benefit of giving even a little bit, and be inspired do the same.
Richard, who serves on the Niagara Community Foundation’s grant committee, didn’t stop there. Compelled to do more to foster the well-being of Niagara’s youth, he decided to bequeath part of his estate to the Foundation, trusting it to carry out his wishes.
“Giving of yourself, your time and your financial support throughout your life is rewarding in so many different ways. If these words motivate my family to take action and I have demonstrated the benefit of these words, then I have accomplished what I wanted to do,” he said. “I don’t want to be famous. I don’t want to set the world on fire. I just want to singe it a little.”
