Providing sustainable support

{

With declining government grants, donor fatigue and growing competition for support from corporations and major donors, it is becoming a challenge to secure sustainable income to meet the operational and program needs of charitable organizations. To be successful, charities need to develop sustainable sources of revenue. One strategy that many charities in Niagara have implemented is to create an endowment fund, the earnings of which provide a steady stream of income to support programs and services. Since 2000 more than 30 charities have opened such a fund with the Foundation and in 2013 Bethlehem Housing and Support Services of Niagara followed suit. The Foundation provides resources and assistance to help these organizations educate their supporters on the benefits and mechanics of how to make a gift through a bequest in a will, the advantages of naming the charity as the beneficiary of an insurance policy and the tax benefits of gifts of securities. Donors are able to make their gift directly to one of these funds, either during their lifetime or through a bequest. This ensures that their annual donation, upon which the charities were relying, continues long into the future. These types of funds connect people who care to causes that matter most to them.
